This study wants to know Blanche DuBois uses some kinds of metaphors in her utterances. Based on their characteristics, they are implicit metaphor, extended metaphor, dead metaphor, and active metaphor. Meanwhile, based on their syntactical place, the writer concludes those metaphors are also called as nominal metaphor, predicative metaphor, and sentential metaphor. The meaning of the metaphors are different each other.
The same kinds of metaphor produce different meaning depand on the context of the utterance. It means that the kind of meaning that apply in this metaphor is contextual meaning. For instance, “I was so exhausted by all I’d been through my nerves broke”, “I rarely touch it”, and “I was fishing for a compliment, Stanley” all of those metaphors are kind of dead metaphor and called as predicative metaphor.
Nevertheless, they have different meaning. The first utterance means that Blanche feels tired with many kinds of trouble that must be faced.
The second utterance means that Blanche looks for more than the words okay about her appearance. The reason of Blanche DuBois uses those metaphors are to share, to explain, to keep her self-defense, to keep her image, to show her disagreement, to comment on, to gain Stella’s consciousness, and to exert sameone
